Digger (2026) is a dark comedy-drama from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu that hands Tom Cruise one of the strangest roles of his career. He plays Digger Rockwell, an immensely wealthy oil tycoon widely regarded as the most powerful man in the world — a billionaire who lives in grotesque luxury, dotes on his beloved pet cat and treats presidents and prime ministers like members of his own household staff.

That power comes at a price the whole planet is about to pay. A drilling accident at one of Digger’s operations in Greenland tears a colossal sheet of ice loose from the Arctic, and scientists warn that the drifting berg could unleash devastating tsunamis when it finally reaches populated shores. The looming catastrophe is one his own empire helped create, and suddenly the man responsible must find a way to become the man who stops it.

With the ailing President Compson leaning on him for answers, Digger launches a frantic, media-soaked mission to recast himself as humanity’s saviour. Around him circle Ganesh, a clear-eyed scientist trying to keep the response honest, and his half-sister Emma, an outspoken environmentalist who runs her own clean-energy company and sees straight through the show. Saving the world and saving his image become dangerously tangled together.

Part disaster satire, part character study, Digger takes aim at fossil-fuel greed, political cowardice and the comforting stories that powerful people tell to excuse themselves. Cruise leans fully into the absurdity while Iñárritu keeps the spectacle anchored in a very real anxiety about a warming planet. It is a wild, provocative ride built around one uncomfortable question: what happens when the world’s biggest problem insists that he is also its only solution?
