Baththa (2026) is a Tamil action drama starring Vijay Sethupathi, set in the Madras of 1986. It tells the story of a feared local criminal whose very name is enough to empty a street — and of the most unlikely person who changes his life: a timid eight-year-old schoolboy who crosses his path entirely by accident. What follows is as surprising as it is moving.

One ordinary day, the little boy accidentally locks the gangster inside a school restroom. Trapped, hungry and cut off from his world of muscle and money, the hardened man can do nothing but wait — and talk. Through the closed door, the two begin an unlikely conversation, and a strange, tender friendship slowly takes shape between the criminal the whole town fears and the child who fears everything.

As the hours stretch on, the gangster is forced to look at the life that made him — the violence, the loyalty of his men and the family he left behind. Outside, his enemies sense an opportunity and his own gang scrambles to find its missing leader, while inside the restroom, a small boy’s innocent questions begin to crack a heart that years of street wars could not. Lijomol Jose appears in a key supporting role, adding warmth to the gangster’s world.

Baththa stands out for its unusual and heartfelt premise, choosing emotion over gunfire in a genre usually ruled by both. Vijay Sethupathi brings quiet depth to a man rediscovering his humanity, and the lovingly recreated Madras of 1986 gives the film a warm, nostalgic glow. It is a redemption story with a difference — proof that sometimes the smallest key can open the heaviest lock.
