Ishqnama 2026

Summary:

Ishqnama (2026) is a Punjabi period romance inspired by a true story, adapted from the acclaimed book Hind Pak Bordernama and directed by Arvvindr S. Khaira. Set between 1981 and 1988 along the tense India-Pakistan border in Punjab, the film tells the story of Nimma (Jayy Randhawa), a young Sikh poet from Indian Punjab whose verses carry his heart across the fence to Naseema (Shehnaaz Gill), a spirited young woman living in Pakistani Punjab.

Separated by barbed wire, soldiers and the unhealed wounds of Partition, the two lovers hold on to each other through poetry, longing and rare stolen moments. Their bond defies faith, family pressure and the politics of two nations that treat the border as sacred. For Nimma, Naseema is not just the woman he loves — she is the muse behind every line he writes and the reason he refuses to accept a divided world.

As political tensions rise along the border, circumstances threaten to tear the lovers apart forever. In a moment of desperation, Nimma takes the unthinkable step of crossing the heavily guarded border wire to reach Naseema, risking arrest, disgrace and even his life. What follows is a gripping tale of pursuit and sacrifice, where every mile between the two villages feels like a wall built by history itself.

Backed by the soulful music of B Praak and Jaani’s heartfelt lyrics, Ishqnama is an epic old-school romance about love as an act of rebellion. Remarkably, the real Nimma is still alive in India today, which lends the film the weight of living history. It is a moving tribute to two ordinary people whose love refused to recognise the line drawn between two countries. Some borders can divide land, but never a heart that refuses to stop loving.
