Minions & Monsters (2026) takes Illumination’s little yellow chaos-makers back to the golden age of Hollywood. Framed as a story told to wide-eyed children on a studio museum tour, the film follows three misfit Minions — thoughtful artist James, excitable dreamer Henry and silent, sign-language-using Ed — members of a tribe that has bumbled through history loyally serving, and accidentally losing, one villainous master after another.
Still hunting for a boss worth serving, the trio blunders onto the set of a silent western in the 1920s and accidentally becomes a sensation. Director Max and the Bright Brothers studio plaster them across every picture, and the Minions live the full glamour of Hollywood stardom. Then talking pictures arrive, and stars who speak only Minionese are suddenly yesterday’s news. Pushed aside, James, Henry and Ed decide that the surest way back to the top is to make a film entirely of their own.
Their big idea is a monster movie — and thanks to a mysterious spellbook inherited from a long-gone warlock, they can skip the costumes and trick photography altogether by summoning a real monster to star in it. Enter Goomi, a small green creature with grand schemes of his own. Casting a genuine beast turns out to be a catastrophic idea, as real monsters break loose and a playful production spirals into chaos that threatens the studio, the town and possibly the whole world.
Packed with affectionate nods to classic cinema, from silent slapstick to the great monster pictures, Minions & Monsters is a love letter to the movies wrapped in cheerful mayhem. Director Pierre Coffin voices the Minions alongside a starry supporting cast, balancing giggles for children with sly jokes that film buffs will savour. It is a monstrously silly adventure about creativity, friendship and daring to chase your own dream.
