On the ghats of Varanasi, near the ancient Assi Ghat, a woman’s search for justice after a life-changing incident brings her to a courtroom where truth is contested at every step. Taapsee Pannu plays a determined woman who refuses to be silenced, even as social pressure, delays and public judgement make the fight heavier with each hearing.

She finds an ally in a committed lawyer and supporter played by Kani Kusruti, whose own experiences with the system shape a fierce, grounded case. Revathi and Manoj Pahwa bring depth as figures caught between family, community and conscience, while Naseeruddin Shah lends gravitas to proceedings where a single testimony can change everything for those involved. Outside the court, media attention and local opinion shift constantly, and the family must learn to live under a spotlight they never asked for while the legal process moves painfully slowly forward.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film moves between the narrow lanes of the old city and tense courtroom exchanges, examining how institutions respond when an ordinary woman demands accountability. It raises difficult questions about evidence, character and credibility without reducing its characters to symbols, keeping the human cost at the centre of every argument. The writing gives space to witnesses, officials and bystanders alike, building a layered portrait of a city and a system being tested by one woman’s refusal to quietly withdraw her complaint and disappear.

Assi is a hard-hitting social and courtroom drama about dignity, resilience and the long road to justice in India today. With powerful performances and a rooted setting, it portrays a fight that is personal and collective at once, and the courage it takes to keep speaking when silence would be far easier.
