Decades after the rage virus first tore through Britain, a fragile new order has grown in the shadow of the ruins, where survivors cling to old rituals and uneasy alliances to stay alive. Beyond the safety of the mainland, infected hordes still roam the countryside, and every journey outside protected ground carries the risk of never returning home again. For children born after the outbreak, that lost world exists only in fading stories.

At the heart of this bleak landscape stands Dr Kelson, a thoughtful and haunted man who has devoted himself to understanding the infected rather than simply destroying them. Around the towering Bone Temple, a memorial built from the remains of the dead, Kelson pursues a controversial line of research that others consider dangerous, even blasphemous, yet it may hold a fragile hope for humanity. His quiet work at the temple has made him both respected and deeply distrusted.

Young Spike, now travelling on his own after painful losses, is drawn into Kelson’s world while also crossing paths with a terrifying cult led by the charismatic Jimmy. Dressed in matching tracksuits and ruled by ritual, violence and blind devotion, Jimmy’s followers see the apocalypse not as a tragedy but as a stage for their leader’s twisted glory. To Spike, who has never known safety, their certainty looks dangerously like a promise.

Director Nia DaCosta expands the saga with dread, striking imagery and difficult moral questions about mercy, faith and what survival should cost. As Kelson’s discoveries, Spike’s search for belonging and Jimmy’s rising influence pull the story towards confrontation, the film asks whether compassion can survive in a world that has rewarded cruelty for nearly three decades. The result is a sequel that honours the original while finding frightening new ground.
