Summary:

“Viswam” (2024) is a Telugu-language action-comedy film directed by Sreenu Vaitla, featuring Gopichand and Kavya Thapar in the lead roles. The narrative centers on Gopi (Gopichand), who introduces himself as a cab driver in Milan and falls in love with Sameera (Kavya Thapar), a film stylist. Their relationship leads him back to Hyderabad, where he aims to win over Sameera’s family. Concurrently, a young girl named Darshana becomes the sole witness to a Union Minister’s assassination, making her a target for the perpetrators. Gopi steps in to protect Darshana, revealing deeper connections and motives as the story unfolds

The film attempts to blend action sequences with comedic elements, a signature style of director Sreenu Vaitla. Gopichand delivers a performance that aligns with his established action-hero persona, effectively handling both intense fight scenes and lighter, humorous moments. Kavya Thapar’s role, while primarily centered on providing a glamorous presence, complements the lead with her on-screen charm. The ensemble cast includes notable comedians such as Prudhvi and Vennela Kishore, whose performances inject sporadic humor into the narrative.

Despite its star-studded lineup and high production values, “Viswam” has faced criticism for its reliance on outdated storytelling techniques and a formulaic screenplay. Reviewers have pointed out that the film’s plot and comedic sequences feel reminiscent of earlier works, lacking innovation and freshness. While certain comedic scenes, particularly those involving Prudhvi and Vennela Kishore, have been appreciated, the overall narrative has been described as predictable and lacking depth.

Technically, the film benefits from Chaitan Bharadwaj’s music, which includes a couple of mass-appealing songs, and K.V. Guhan’s cinematography that captures vibrant visuals, especially in the song sequences. However, the editing by Amar Reddy Kudumula could have been more precise to eliminate unnecessary scenes that contribute to the film’s sluggish pace.

In summary, “Viswam” offers a mix of action and comedy that might appeal to audiences seeking a conventional entertainer. However, its lack of novel content and reliance on tried-and-tested formulas may not resonate with viewers looking for fresh and engaging storytelling.
