Narappa (2021) is an Indian Telugu-language action drama film directed by Srikanth Addala. It is an official remake of the Tamil film Asuran (2019), which was inspired by the novel Vekkai by Poomani. Starring Venkatesh Daggubati in the lead role, the movie explores themes of caste oppression, revenge, and survival, set against the backdrop of rural India.
The story follows Narappa, a humble farmer living in the village of Ramasagaram with his wife Sundaramma (Priyamani) and their children. Although Narappa appears to be a submissive man, he harbors a dark past that he keeps hidden from his family. The central conflict arises when his elder son, Munikanna, becomes entangled in a violent feud with the powerful landlord Pandusami and his men over a land dispute. The situation escalates, leading to Munikanna’s brutal murder at the hands of the upper-caste landlords. Enraged by his brother’s death, Narappa’s younger son, Seenabba, kills Pandusami’s son in a fit of vengeance, triggering a deadly hunt for the boy.
To protect Seenabba, Narappa embarks on a perilous journey, escaping from their village while being pursued by their enemies. As the narrative unfolds, Narappa’s hidden past as a fierce warrior is revealed, showing his transformation from a ruthless fighter to a peaceful farmer. His past experiences and the violence he endured shape his desperate attempts to shield his family from a similar fate.
The film delivers a powerful commentary on the socio-economic divide and caste-based violence in Indian society. With intense performances, gripping action sequences, and emotional depth, Narappa stands out as a compelling and hard-hitting drama, emphasizing the importance of resilience and the price of revenge.
