Lingaa is a 2014 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by K.S. Ravikumar and starring Rajinikanth in a dual role. The film also features Anushka Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles. Set across two timelines, the story follows Lingaa, a petty thief, who discovers his grandfather Raja Lingeswaran’s heroic legacy and transforms into a savior for a village threatened by corruption.
The narrative begins in the village of Solaiyur, where a dam built by Raja Lingeswaran, a noble civil engineer and freedom fighter, is under threat from corrupt MP Nagabooshan. When an honest dam inspector is murdered for refusing to declare the dam unsafe, he hides a crucial pen drive in an abandoned temple, accessible only by Raja Lingeswaran’s descendants. Lakshmi, a journalist and granddaughter of the village head, embarks on a mission to find Lingaa, the long-lost grandson of Raja Lingeswaran. Initially reluctant due to his resentment toward his grandfather, Lingaa is coerced into visiting Solaiyur, where he learns about his grandfather’s sacrifices and the dam’s significance.
Through flashbacks, the film reveals Raja Lingeswaran’s struggle against British oppression to build the dam, which ultimately led to his banishment from the village. Inspired by his grandfather’s legacy, Lingaa decides to reform and protect the dam from Nagabooshan’s destructive plans. In a climactic showdown, Lingaa exposes Nagabooshan’s corruption, saves the dam, and earns redemption for his past misdeeds.
The film received mixed reviews, with praise for Rajinikanth’s performance, A.R. Rahman’s music, and the action sequences, but criticism for its lengthy runtime and uneven screenplay. Despite its flaws, Lingaa remains a tale of redemption, heritage, and the triumph of good over greed, resonating with audiences as a celebration of Rajinikanth’s enduring star power.
