Long ago, the demon king Hiranyakashipu performed severe penance and won a powerful boon from Lord Brahma that made him almost impossible to kill — neither man nor beast, neither day nor night, neither inside nor outside could end his life. Drunk on this power, he conquered the three worlds, declared himself God, and banned the worship of Lord Vishnu across his kingdom.
Against his father’s cruelty stood Hiranyakashipu’s own young son, Prahlada, whose devotion to Lord Vishnu could not be shaken by threats, punishment or temptation. The enraged king tried again and again to kill the boy — through soldiers, poison, wild animals and fire — but every attempt failed because Vishnu’s protection surrounded his little devotee at every step.
The confrontation reaches its peak when Hiranyakashipu challenges Prahlada to prove that Vishnu exists everywhere, even inside a palace pillar. When the king strikes the pillar in anger, Lord Vishnu emerges in his most fearsome form — Narsimha, half man and half lion. At twilight, on the threshold of the palace, he defeats the demon king in a way that honours every condition of the boon yet ends his tyranny.
